Background of the Project
A few humble and desperate housewives anxious to make a difference in society initially formed this association. These women volunteered in identifying the drug peddlers and traffickers within different localities within Lunglei town and handing them over to Community Based Organization such as YMA, SRS etc. and try to minimized drugs related crimes within the community. It gave funding through Mizoram State AIDS Control Society (MSACS) to fight HIV and Drugs among Injecting Drug Users (IDU’s) of Lunglei town and amongst Jail Inmates of Lunglei District Jail.
Targeted Intervention (IDU) project was implemented in March 2000 by Women Anti- Drug Association at Lunglei covering 10 sites was taken up to intervene by impart knowledge on Harm Reduction by providing services of NSEP, condom promotion, counseling and community mobilization at DIC and Outreach. STI, ICTC, ART, DOT and other services through referral and linkage services. And also to make an enabling environment where all the community members could understand the problems related to IDU and even to make community people participate in intervention of the targeted population. WADA DIC looks after 534 IDU (10 female and 524 Male IDUs) at the end of the year of which 3were deceased.In total there are 11 sites and 3 hot spot. From these year we have covered Hnahthial town Sub DIC with a target population of 100 IDUs which is currently covered by 2 PES.
